Multiple studies have shown that pet ownership boosts the mental well-being of the sick, the elderly, and the disadvantaged. A recent survey has now added another group to benefit from the companionship of pets: children. In a poll of 500 children ages 12 to 16, 81 percent said that they talk frequently to their pets. The children felt that dogs and cats offered emotional support, such as listening, protecting, reassurance, and/or showing appreciation.
